Thyroid Health

FACT: Women who have an underactive or unbalanced thyroid gland may have a higher risk of breast cancer.

PREVENTION: Certain foods, when used without sufficient IODINE in the diet can block the thyroid’s ability to use iodine.  These include the raw brassica family: cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and soy.  Include seaweed in your diet daily to overcome the potential iodine-blocking effect of these foods, which are otherwise great for breast health.

IODINE: daily minimal requirement for iodine is 150 mcg or about 1 gram of seaweed.  Iodine Therapy and thyroid metabolism must be monitored closely.  With too much iodine, the thyroid can become either overactive or suppressed.

Dr. Oz recently (April 2011) spoke about the increase in Thyroid Cancer in women and pointed to the use of Dental X-rays and Breast X-rays (mammograms) as possible related causes.
